Dhaka, Aug 19 (V7N) – Speaking at a virtual discussion marking the 45th founding anniversary of the Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman stated that democratic elections are the primary mechanism for empowering people and ensuring political rights in any state. He stressed that without the active political participation of the people, neither the government nor the state can achieve true strength or legitimacy.
Referring to the interim government’s announcement of a national election scheduled for February, Tarique Rahman said that the long wait of nearly 15 years for a meaningful electoral process may finally come to an end. He expressed hope that citizens will have the opportunity to freely vote for their preferred candidates, which he described as a shared national aspiration.
Tarique also noted that recent statements by several political parties have created uncertainty among democracy-loving citizens regarding the credibility of the upcoming election. He called on all pro-democracy political forces to unite, warning that division among democratic parties could open the door for the return of authoritarian or fascist elements.
He emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant and committed to democratic principles, urging the public and political leaders alike to avoid creating obstacles that hinder the restoration of political rights. He warned that if democracy is suppressed, not only political workers but also their families and the entire state could face serious consequences.
Tarique asserted that true power lies with the people, not with constitutional clauses or written laws. “Fascism cannot be resisted by legislation alone. Only a politically empowered public can prevent its spread in the state and society,” he said.
He further urged political activists to avoid engaging in revenge politics following the fall of any authoritarian regime, emphasizing the importance of honoring the sacrifices of those who fought for democracy. He encouraged leaders to focus on well-planned initiatives aimed at long-term political and economic reforms.
Highlighting the BNP’s future vision, Tarique said that the party is committed to improving living standards by generating employment opportunities both domestically and abroad. He stated that if elected with direct public support, the BNP would implement its development plans swiftly and effectively.
The event, held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre, was organized by Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal, a voluntary wing of BNP founded by former President Ziaur Rahman on August 19, 1980. Party leaders, including Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, and members of the Swechchhasebak Dal paid tribute to Ziaur Rahman by placing wreaths at his grave in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
Tarique also called on the voluntary wing’s leaders to expand their existing healthcare campaigns and initiate union-level cleanliness drives to raise environmental awareness and set an example of constructive political action.
In a closing appeal, he urged party members to avoid any activities that could harm BNP’s image and to maintain close ties with the people. “BNP’s true strength lies in its manpower and popular support. Stay rooted in the people’s love, and continue showing love in return,” he said.
The event concluded with emotional testimonies from children of Swechchhasebak Dal members who were victims of enforced disappearance or extrajudicial killings during past political crackdowns, leaving a profound impact on the audience. BNP Standing Committee members Nazrul Islam Khan, Selima Rahman, and Hafizuddin Ahmed Khan were also in attendance.
