Narayanganj, Sept 22 (V7N) – Police in Narayanganj recovered five sacks filled with National Identity (NID) cards from a garbage dump in the Fatullah area on Sunday evening. The recovery took place near the Fatullah Stadium along the Dhaka–Narayanganj Link Road, creating widespread public concern.

In addition to NID cards, a large number of polling officer cards and official seals were also found. Locals expressed shock over the discovery, raising questions about how such sensitive materials ended up discarded.

Nazmul Hasan Babu, a local leader of the Jubo Dal of the BNP, said he first noticed suspicious activity. “I run a sawmill near the stadium and have been campaigning against dumping waste here. In the evening, I saw a white vehicle arrive and unload several sacks. When my people checked, they found them filled with NID cards. We immediately informed the police, who later arrived with officials from the Election Commission to recover the items,” he told reporters.

Rakibuzzaman, Additional Election Commissioner of Narayanganj, confirmed that the recovered cards were from Gazipur. “Initial observations suggest these were discarded old cards, not smartcards. A detailed investigation is underway,” he said.

Following the recovery, the cards and equipment were taken to the Narayanganj Election Commission office for examination. Officials are now verifying the authenticity and source of the materials.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) of Narayanganj, Tarek Al Mehdi, confirmed the incident, stating that police had visited the site. “The cards have been recovered and further details will be disclosed after the investigation,” he said.

The discovery has triggered concerns over security and disposal practices of sensitive election materials, with calls for a thorough probe to ensure accountability.
