Rajshahi, Sept 22 (V7N) – Alamgir Hossain, a returnee from abroad residing in Baghna village of Saranjai Union in Tanore Upazila, has astonished locals by constructing his dream home using discarded colorful plastic bottles, creating an eco-friendly and cost-effective residence. The construction is nearly complete, and the family is expected to move in shortly after the official inauguration.
This is the first home in the Barendra region built primarily from plastic bottles, generating widespread interest. The house has been carefully constructed using approximately 25,000 plastic bottles, and includes two bedrooms, a toilet, and a bathroom. The structure incorporates bottles, cement, sand, wood, and colorful tin sheets for roofing. The total construction cost was around Tk 4 lakh, whereas a conventional house of similar size would have cost Tk 6–7 lakh.
Alamgir Hossain, who has worked as a bricklayer abroad for several years, explained that he was inspired by a YouTube video and began planning the project in mid-2024. He sourced the plastic bottles from various shops, spending just Tk 12,000 for 25,000 bottles. The construction took approximately six months, and people from nearby areas have been visiting to see the innovative home.
The bottles were filled with sand and soil to act as bricks, with cement used for walls and pillars, and tin sheets for the roof. The house is earthquake-resistant and bulletproof.
Initially, locals considered the project unusual, but they now admire Alamgir’s creativity in converting waste plastic into a practical, durable home. Many have expressed interest in constructing similar eco-friendly houses.
Tanore Upazila Engineer Saidur Rahman stated, “Such houses reduce construction costs, but durability and environmental safety need to be carefully tested.” Upazila Nirbahi Officer Liaqat Salman added, “Plastic is normally harmful to the environment, but Alamgir has creatively repurposed it into an environmentally friendly home, which is highly commendable.”
