Rajshahi, June 13 (V7N) – Residents of Rajshahi are breathing a sigh of relief as the first day of Asharh (Bengali month) brought a much-needed downpour of 19 millimeters of rain on Sunday afternoon. This marks the end of nearly two weeks of scorching heat and intense sunshine, bringing a wave of comfort to the city.
According to the Rajshahi Meteorological Observatory, the city had not seen rain since June 3, after which temperatures steadily climbed. On Eid day (June 7), the highest temperature recorded was 36 degrees Celsius. The heat continued to intensify, reaching up to 37.3 degrees Celsius, a mark also observed on Saturday.
However, by Sunday afternoon, the maximum temperature had dropped to 35 degrees Celsius before the rains began. The increased cloud cover accompanying the rain suggests that the precipitation may continue for some time.
"After the intense heat, rain has finally arrived today, and it is expected to continue," said Md. Rohidul Islam, in-charge of the Rajshahi Met Office. "Monsoon winds are currently highly active across Bangladesh, increasing the likelihood of more rain."
The refreshing rain has thoroughly washed away the dust accumulated on the city's trees and plants. Abu Yusuf, a student of Rajshahi College in the Meherchandi area, shared his experience: "From morning until noon, the sun was incredibly harsh. Sweat was pouring from my body. Suddenly, clouds gathered, and the rain started, washing away all my fatigue."
Md. Roni, an autorickshaw driver met at Moslem Mor in Paba Upazila, expressed similar relief. "For several days, driving an autorickshaw was unbearable due to the heat. You couldn't go out without an umbrella or a towel. Today's rain has brought so much comfort."
Md. Amirul Islam, who was clearing weeds in the Mohanpur area of the city, added, "I had been working since morning and was drenched in sweat from the intense heat. As I worked, the rain started, washing away all the sweat. Now, working feels good."
This refreshing rain has brought a much-anticipated coolness to the minds and bodies of the city's inhabitants. The city, exhausted by the severe heat, seems to have come back to life.
