DHAKA, Mar 26 (V7N) – A Dhaka court has granted a five-day remand for Lieutenant General (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, the former Director General of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), in connection with the murder of Delwar Hossain during the July Movement. On Thursday afternoon, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Siddique Azad passed the order after the investigation officer, DB Sub-Inspector Kafil Uddin, presented the accused and sought a seven-day remand for interrogation.
Sheikh Mamun Khaled was apprehended by law enforcement agencies from his residence in Mirpur DOHS on Wednesday night. While he was formally shown arrested in the Delwar Hossain murder case—which occurred in the capital’s Mirpur area during the student-led uprising—officials confirmed he is also under investigation for several other high-profile allegations. These include the controversial involvement of the DGFI in political engineering, his role during the 1/11 caretaker government transition, and alleged financial irregularities related to the Jalsiri housing scheme.
The former military official has been under intense scrutiny since the fall of the Awami League government. In May 2025, following a petition by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), a court slapped a travel ban on both Khaled and his wife to prevent them from leaving the country during ongoing graft probes. Khaled’s career has been marked by significant influence; he served as the Director of the Counter Intelligence Bureau (CIB) at the end of the 2007-08 caretaker tenure before eventually rising to the position of DGFI chief under the Awami League administration.
The arrest of such a high-ranking former intelligence official marks a significant development in the interim government’s efforts to ensure accountability for the violence that occurred during the July Movement. Security around the court premises was tightened today as the former General was produced, reflecting the sensitive nature of the case.
