KUALA LUMPUR, March 26, (V7N) –Iran is allowing Malaysian tankers to pass through the Strait of Hormuz following talks with Iranian, Turkish and other regional leaders, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced Thursday.
Speaking on national television, Anwar said he had spoken with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, as well as Egyptian and Turkish counterparts and other Gulf leaders.
"We're now in the process of releasing the Malaysian oil tankers and the workers involved so that they can continue their journey home," Anwar said, thanking Pezeshkian.
He noted that Malaysia’s petroleum giant Petronas, which produced around two million barrels of oil a day last year, has strengthened the country’s energy position.
However, Anwar warned of looming disruptions in food supplies and rising prices, including for fertiliser, oil and gas.
To curb hoarding and smuggling of subsidised fuel, he announced new measures, including reduced quotas for subsidised fuel and diesel purchase limits in the eastern states of Sabah and Sarawak.
