Madaripur, June 26 (V7N) – A senior member of the anti-discrimination student movement in Madaripur, Masum Billah, was critically injured after being attacked with a hammer during a factional clash between rival groups of the same organization. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon at a community center in the district town.
Following the attack, Masum Billah’s supporters surrounded the local police station and issued a three-hour ultimatum demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible.
According to sources, tensions had been simmering between Hasibullah, a member of the health subcommittee of the newly formed National Citizens’ Party (NCP), and Masum Billah, district convenor of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. The conflict escalated into violence during the NCP’s local conference on Wednesday.
Eyewitnesses and Masum Billah himself alleged that followers of Hasibullah were responsible for the attack. After sustaining serious injuries, Masum was initially taken to Madaripur Sadar Hospital, but due to the severity of his condition, he was later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Law enforcement responded swiftly to the scene to bring the situation under control.
Additional Superintendent of Police in Madaripur, Jahangir Alam, confirmed the incident, stating, “The attackers fled the scene immediately after the incident. Legal action is underway, and multiple teams, including the Detective Branch and local police, have been deployed to apprehend those involved.”
As of Wednesday night, no arrests had been confirmed, but local authorities emphasized that investigations are ongoing and all individuals responsible will be brought to justice.
The incident highlights growing internal strife within new political and student organizations in Bangladesh, raising concerns about increasing violence tied to intra-party rivalries.
