London, Dec 18 (V7N) – Amnesty International has demanded the immediate release of journalist Anis Alamgir, who was recently arrested under allegations related to activities on behalf of the banned Awami League. The organization also urged the interim government to ensure freedom of expression and safeguard the rights of individuals to voice their opinions, particularly ahead of elections.
In a report published on its London-based website on Wednesday, Amnesty’s regional researcher, Rehab Mahmur, highlighted concerns over a growing trend of targeting individuals based on perceived support for banned political activities. “The arrest of Anis Alamgir reflects a worrying pattern of suppressing voices expressing independent opinions or criticisms, using anti-terrorism laws as a tool to silence dissent,” Mahmur said.
Alamgir and four others were accused of allegedly promoting activities on behalf of the prohibited Awami League. On December 15, he was taken into custody under the Anti-Terrorism Act following the filing of the complaint.
According to Amnesty International, the interim government and relevant authorities should respect the country’s obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and create an environment that protects freedom of expression and assembly. Mahmur emphasized, “Authorities must immediately release Anis Alamgir and ensure that anti-terrorism laws are not misused to intimidate or silence individuals before the elections.”
Anis Alamgir had been summoned to the Detective Branch (DB) office of Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Sunday for questioning. He was formally arrested the following day at Uttara West Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The Additional Metropolitan Magistrate, Jashita Islam, approved a five-day police remand upon request from the authorities.
Amnesty International’s call underscores the need for transparent legal processes and the protection of journalistic freedom in Bangladesh, especially during politically sensitive periods.
