Pabna, Dec 15 (V7N) – Ahead of the nuclear fuel loading of the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP), Russian state corporation Rosatom and the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) have jointly initiated a comprehensive public awareness campaign across the project region.

The campaign aims to provide clear, accurate, and essential information about the RNPP to local residents, addressing questions, misconceptions, and concerns regarding nuclear technology, safety measures, environmental impacts, and socio-economic benefits. Representatives from Rosatom and BAEC are directly engaging with communities, fostering open dialogue and providing fact-based answers.

Spanning an entire month, the campaign features Science Festivals, traditional Gambhira performances, and Uthan Baithaks (courtyard meetings) across multiple upazilas of Pabna district. During the Science Festivals, a specially branded nuclear-themed bus carries Rosatom and BAEC representatives to various locations, allowing residents to interact, participate in science-based games, and receive nuclear-themed souvenirs.

A recent debate and question-and-answer session on nuclear technology was jointly organized by the Ishwardi Nuclear Information Center and the Department of Geography and Environmental Science at Pabna University of Science and Technology, further promoting community engagement and education.

The Gambhira performances, themed “Sustainable, Safe, Affordable, and Environment-Friendly Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant,” use traditional entertainment to communicate the project’s significance and safety. Meanwhile, courtyard meetings provide a platform for residents to discuss concerns directly with experts, encouraging informed understanding and positive public perception.

Located in Ishwardi, the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant comprises two units, each with a capacity of 1,200 MW, and utilizes Generation III+ Russian VVER-1200 reactors that comply with all international safety standards. Authorities emphasize that the project will play a key role in ensuring sustainable and reliable energy supply for Bangladesh.
