Ishwardi, Dec 14 (V7N) – The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant in Ishwardi, Pabna, is being developed as an environmentally friendly energy project that does not rely on fossil fuels such as coal, oil, or gas, thereby avoiding harmful greenhouse gas emissions. The project is expected to contribute significantly to climate change mitigation and reduction of air pollution.

The plant employs the modern VVER–1200 reactor technology and adheres to the guidelines of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), ensuring maximum operational safety with no risk to agriculture, fisheries, or the natural environment.

A community engagement meeting was held on Saturday (December 13) under the initiative of the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission and the Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL) to raise awareness and involve local residents in the project. The event, organized at the inspection bungalow premises along the Pakshi road, was attended by approximately 300 local farmers, fishermen, teachers, and religious leaders, including imams and priests.

The program included documentary screenings from various countries, open discussions, Q&A sessions, quiz competitions, and a raffle draw. Dr. Khalekuzzaman, Deputy Project Director, presided over the session. The chief guest was Dr. Zayedul Hasan, Managing Director of NPCBL, and special guests included Pranab Kumar, Additional Superintendent of Police of Ishwardi Circle, Chief Superintendent Mushfika Ahmed, and Deputy Chief Superintendent and Head of Physical Security Division SM Mahmud Arafat. Scientific Officer Robiul Hasan served as the master of ceremonies.

In his address, Dr. Zayedul Hasan emphasized that the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant will enhance Bangladesh’s energy security and serve as a reliable, carbon-free power source alongside renewable energy. He highlighted that the facility is one of the safest nuclear plants globally, producing electricity without heat or carbon emissions, thereby posing no threat to agriculture, fisheries, or the environment.

Addressing concerns about emissions from the cooling towers, he assured that the released water vapor is harmless and reaffirmed that the project prioritizes safety, security, and safeguards while preparing for physical startup.

Following the session, Mufti Olullah, Imam of Ishwardi Central Jame Mosque, said the meeting alleviated local fears about potential heat hazards from the plant and called for more awareness programs. Local resident and retired school teacher Amirul Islam added that the discussion helped correct misconceptions about the plant and expressed support for regular community engagement. He noted that the project has already positively impacted local living standards, employment, and business expansion.

The meeting reinforced the plant’s role not only as a source of clean energy but also as a catalyst for regional development and environmental sustainability.
