DHAKA, June 19 (V7N) – Lieutenant General (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, the Adviser to the Ministry of Home Affairs, today lauded the courage of police personnel, stating they are "working bravely to check crimes even by risking their lives." His remarks came after he visited two police officers at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) who sustained bullet injuries in an early morning attack by suspected illegal drug traffickers in the capital's Fakirapool area.

The incident occurred during an anti-drug raid when Detective Branch (DB) personnel attempted to intercept a private car suspected of being used in drug peddling. According to Deputy Commissioner of DB of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Muhammad Talebur Rahman, the drug traffickers opened fire from inside their vehicle.Assistant Commissioner Soeb Kabir sustained a bullet wound to his hand, while Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Atik Hasan was shot in the abdomen and Constable Sujan in the leg. AC Soeb received first aid, while ASI Atik Hasan and Constable Sujan were admitted to DMCH for treatment. Home Affairs Adviser Chowdhury confirmed that both injured officers are now out of danger. Constable Sujan's bullet was removed last night and he will be shifted to the police hospital, while ASI Atik, whose vital organs were not hit, will undergo surgery in 48 hours before being transferred.

Police have arrested three individuals suspected of involvement in the shooting and the drug trade. Around 9,500 pieces of Yaba tablets and the private car used in the peddling were seized from their possession. While three suspects were apprehended at the scene, several others managed to escape under the cover of gunfire. A case has been filed in connection with the incident.

The Home Affairs Adviser emphasized that police are equipped with the "necessary arms" for their duties, countering recent discussions about whether a government decision to withdraw lethal firearms from the regular police force might put officers at greater risk. He stated that the criminals in this incident used pistols, not heavy arms, and praised the officers for their bravery in successfully arresting suspects and recovering drugs despite the danger. "Criminals are not getting the kind of space they used to," he added.
