Khulna, June 15 (V7N) – Beg Liaquat Ali, Vice President of the Khulna Metropolitan Awami League and former president of the Khanjahan Ali Police Station unit, was reportedly beaten by local residents and subsequently handed over to police today, Saturday, June 14. He was arrested from the city's Fulbari Gate Bazar intersection at approximately 12:30 PM.
Beg Liaquat Ali's residence is located in front of the Badamtala Police Training Center in the Khanjahan Ali Police Station area.
A video circulating on social media shows a man holding Beg Liaquat Ali by the collar while he is sitting on the ground. A crowd surrounds him, verbally abusing him and recounting alleged instances of torture he inflicted on locals. Some individuals are seen physically assaulting him, with one man heard saying, "You did not even spare my old father. You went to beat him too."
Sources indicate that multiple cases were filed against Beg Liaquat Ali in Dighlia, Daulatpur, Khan Jahan Ali, and Savar police stations after August 5 [2024, when the Awami League's political activities were banned]. He had previously been detained by police on May 13 when he went to court to seek bail, a day after the Awami League's activities were formally banned. He was released on bail approximately a week before Eid. Since then, he had been living at home.
Local residents allege that during the Awami League's time in power, Beg Liaquat Ali had forcibly occupied the position of president of the Fulbari Gate Bazar Merchants' Association. They claim he ignored demands for elections from ordinary traders, including those who supported the Awami League, leading to widespread anger among the market's business community.
Kabir Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khan Jahan Ali police station, confirmed that there are several cases pending against Beg Liaquat Ali and that he had been in hiding for an extended period. Police were informed by locals around 1:00 PM on Saturday. He was rescued and admitted to the prison cell of Khulna Medical College Hospital for treatment. OC Hossain stated that Beg Liaquat Ali would be formally arrested after receiving medical attention.
