Dhaka, Aug 24 (V7N) – A heated altercation involving physical confrontation took place on Saturday at the Election Commission premises between supporters of Barrister Rumeen Farhana, a senior leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), and leaders of the Nationalist Citizen Party (NCP). The clash reportedly stemmed from disagreements over the parliamentary boundaries for the Brahmanbaria-3 constituency.
According to an official statement from the NCP, the party’s Senior Joint Chief Organizer, Ataullah, was physically assaulted in the presence of Rumeen Farhana. The NCP further alleged that two other members of the party—Engineer Aminul Haque Chowdhury and Mustafa Suman—were also injured during the incident.
When questioned at a press conference following the scuffle, Rumeen Farhana explained her side of the story, stating, “An unknown individual pushed me inside the commission office. I am a lone woman in such a setting—naturally, my supporters could not remain silent. That same individual later charged at me again, which led my people to react.”
She also accused the NCP of bringing in outsiders to the commission, stating, “They came with musclemen. They pushed us, and in response, they were pushed back. Nothing beyond that happened.”
Barrister Farhana, who is contesting for the Brahmanbaria-3 seat, expressed her frustration and disappointment over the incident. “I have fought for the BNP for 15 years, and now people from our own alliance are shoving me at the Election Commission. It's disgraceful that such violence occurred in such an institution.”
The Election Commission has not yet released an official statement regarding the incident. Observers note that with the national polls approaching, political tension is visibly rising across multiple parties and alliances, particularly around seat sharing and candidate nominations.
No arrests have been reported as of the time of publication, though calls have been made for the commission to ensure order and neutrality within its premises during such high-stakes political activities.
