Dhaka, Feb 06 (V7N) — Mahfuzzaman Sarkar, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of the Diplomatic Security Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), was assaulted in Hatirjheel following a minor car collision late Wednesday night.
A case was filed with Hatirjheel Police Station on Wednesday (February 5) night in connection with the incident. Five people have been arrested so far, police confirmed.
The arrested are Morshed Alam, Md. Billal Hossain, Mohammad Alamgir Hossain, Swapan Sarkar, and Sifat Yunus Lelin.
According to police sources, ADC Mahfuzzaman Sarkar was returning from official duties and passing through the Hatirjheel area when a minor collision occurred with another vehicle near Police Plaza while both cars were driving side by side.
Following the collision, occupants of the other vehicle allegedly blocked the ADC’s car. An argument ensued, after which they reportedly called additional people to the spot. At one stage, around 20–22 individuals attacked the police officer, beating him indiscriminately.
Later, Mahfuzzaman Sarkar was rescued and taken to hospital. He sustained serious injuries and received 17 stitches. He is currently undergoing treatment at United Hospital in Dhaka.
Police said the attackers are businessmen by profession and were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
Law enforcement authorities said investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest others involved in the attack.
