Cox’s Bazar, Dec 22 (V7N) – Construction on Cox’s Bazar’s Digalia–Chakbaitta road, funded by JICA, faced allegations of irregularities after reports surfaced that red hill soil was being used instead of standard construction sand. Following media coverage, corrective measures were promptly initiated, and the improper soil began being removed from the site on Sunday, December 21.
The project, costing approximately Tk 16 crore and spanning over 4,000 meters, was intended to use high-quality sand for the base and sub-base layers to ensure durability and longevity. However, the contractor was reportedly using red soil sourced from nearby hills, raising concerns over the road’s structural integrity and long-term sustainability.
Local residents had observed the irregularities earlier but noted that no corrective action had been taken at the time. After the media highlighted the issue, the project authorities started removing the red soil, giving the community some reassurance that the road construction would now adhere to proper standards.
Contractor Ahmed Kabir assured that no further irregularities would occur during construction. Upazila Engineer Mohammad Touhidul Islam confirmed that work had been halted following the allegations and that the red hill soil was being removed. He emphasized that appropriate measures would be taken if any violations were identified.
The prompt corrective response has been welcomed by the local population, who hope that the project will now be completed according to the original specifications, ensuring a safe and durable roadway.
