DHAKA, March 7, (V7N) - Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood today reassured citizens that Bangladesh has adequate fuel reserves and urged people not to panic-buy petroleum products.
“There is no reason for people to worry about fuel oil,” the minister told reporters outside the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) after a meeting with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The two discussed the global energy situation amid concerns over supply disruptions caused by the ongoing Middle East conflict.
Mahmood explained that the current rationing system at fuel stations was introduced to manage uncertainty over the conflict’s duration. However, he noted that rationing has led some citizens to stockpile fuel unnecessarily, creating panic. “In reality, there is no shortage of fuel oil,” he said, adding that two additional shipments are scheduled to arrive on March 9.
He clarified that petrol stations receive fixed allocations, which may cause temporary shortages if sold quickly, but restocking occurs with the next supply. “We are closely monitoring the situation and will deploy mobile courts starting tomorrow to prevent irregularities and ensure smooth distribution,” Mahmood added.
On the rationing system’s duration, the minister said it would depend on how long the conflict persists, stressing the need for prudent resource management. He also highlighted that the government is exploring alternative energy sources beyond Qatar and working to secure supplies from other countries if necessary.
State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Aninda Islam Amit, Division Secretary Mohammad Saiful Islam, and PMO Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman were present at the briefing.
