Dhaka, Feb 14 (V7N) — Chief Adviser to the Interim Government Muhammad Yunus has congratulated Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizens Party (NCP), for the party’s performance in the 13th National Parliament elections, describing it as a significant moment in the country’s democratic journey.

In a message sent on Saturday (February 14), Prof. Yunus said the courage, determination, and confidence with which the NCP contested the polls under Nahid Islam’s leadership would be remembered as an important chapter in Bangladesh’s democratic history.

He noted that the party, formed only a year ago in the context of the student-public uprising, contested 30 seats and won six, while putting up strong competition in several others — calling it an “extraordinary achievement.” He said the success reflects the confidence, aspirations, and democratic spirit of the younger generation rather than merely election statistics.

Recalling the turbulent days of the uprising, the Chief Adviser said Nahid Islam’s leadership and resolve helped keep the movement disciplined and goal-oriented, adding that the sacrifices of activists have earned deep gratitude from the nation. He expressed personal appreciation and respect for those involved.

Prof. Yunus also said his experience working with Nahid Islam in the Advisory Council, albeit briefly, left him impressed by his efficiency, depth of understanding, principled stance, and interest in administrative processes.

Emphasizing the broader significance, he said democracy flourishes when new voices emerge and generational bridges are built. The NCP’s initial electoral success, he said, shows that people — especially youth — are willing to place trust in principled politics, making it the party’s responsibility to uphold that trust.

He added that the party’s parliamentary representation provides a historic opportunity to articulate public aspirations, particularly those of young people, and expressed hope that under Nahid Islam’s leadership, the NCP would contribute to strengthening democratic institutions through constructive and responsible political practice.

Concluding the message, the Chief Adviser described the electoral success as a precursor to greater responsibilities ahead, expressing hope that the party’s transition from protest movement to mainstream politics would preserve its ideals and values.
