Washington, Nov 05 (V7N) – The Democratic Party has achieved major victories in key races across Virginia, New Jersey, and New York City, signaling strong momentum in the early phase of the U.S. electoral cycle.
According to CNN, Democratic candidate Zohrab Mamdani has won the New York City mayoral election in the unofficial count, making him the first Muslim mayor in the city’s history. Mamdani’s victory marks a significant milestone in American urban politics, highlighting the growing diversity of political leadership in major U.S. cities.
In Virginia, former Democratic congresswoman and ex-CIA officer Abigail Spanberger has been elected as the state’s next governor, becoming the first woman to hold the position. She defeated Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earl-Sears after running a campaign focused on citizens’ purchasing power, local economic issues, and the effects of federal job cuts and government shutdowns.
Home to more than 300,000 federal employees, Virginia was a critical battleground. Throughout her campaign, Spanberger sought to link her opponent to former President Donald Trump, branding Earl-Sears as a Trump-aligned candidate—despite Trump himself not issuing an official endorsement.
Meanwhile, in New Jersey, Democratic candidate Mikey Sherrill is projected to win the governorship, becoming the first female Democratic governor in the state’s history. Sherrill is expected to defeat Republican Jack Ciattarelli, according to preliminary results.
Today’s elections are widely viewed as the first major electoral test of Donald Trump’s second presidency, offering insight into public sentiment midway through his current term.
Former U.S. President Joe Biden congratulated both Mikey Sherrill and Abigail Spanberger on their victories, describing the results as “a reaffirmation of faith in progressive leadership.”
Although Biden did not campaign directly for either candidate, he had supported both women in their 2018 congressional races, even appearing alongside Sherrill in campaign events in New Jersey.
In a notable historical turn, Sherrill had called for Biden to withdraw from the presidential race after his July 2024 debate with Donald Trump, which drew widespread criticism over Biden’s age and performance. Following that debate, Biden stepped down, and Vice President Kamala Harris took over as the Democratic nominee, running against Trump in the presidential election.
