Islamabad, Aug 28 (V7N) – The flood situation in Pakistan is deteriorating further, with 17 new deaths reported in Punjab province in the last 24 hours, according to several media outlets including Mid Day.

So far, over 1,500 villages have been submerged, affecting more than 1 million people. The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority confirmed that thousands were rescued on Wednesday, while financial aid has been announced for the victims.

The situation remains critical as water levels continue to rise in the Chenab, Jhelum and Sutlej rivers. Adverse weather has also forced the closure of Sialkot International Airport for another 24 hours.

Meteorological authorities said the region has recorded the heaviest rainfall in 49 years, warning that torrential rain may continue until September 2. Officials have described this as the worst flood in four decades.

Since the monsoon season began in June, at least 819 people have died in Pakistan, with nearly half of the deaths recorded in August alone.

Meanwhile, neighboring India has reported 60 deaths this month due to floods and natural disasters.
