Dhaka, Aug 25 (V7N) – The United States has commended Bangladesh for providing shelter to displaced Rohingyas fleeing persecution in Myanmar, while also appreciating the efforts of other South Asian countries that have hosted refugees.

In a press statement issued on Sunday, US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Thomas Tommy Pigott expressed Washington’s solidarity with the people of Myanmar, including Rohingyas and other ethnic minorities facing violence and displacement.

“The United States thanks the Government of Bangladesh for sheltering the displaced Rohingya, and also acknowledges the contributions of other countries in the region that have extended refuge to Myanmar’s victims,” the statement said.

Following Myanmar’s military crackdown in Rakhine in August 2017, more than 700,000 Rohingyas fled across the border into Bangladesh. Each year, around 30,000 children are born in refugee camps, bringing the total Rohingya population in Bangladesh to over 1.3 million.
