Colombo, June 28 (V7N) — Bangladesh suffered a heavy defeat against Sri Lanka, losing the Colombo Test by an innings and 78 runs, as batting failures continued to plague the side. Following the match, Nazmul Hossain Shanto announced his resignation as Bangladesh’s Test captain.
Speaking at a press conference after the match, Shanto said, “I am announcing that I will step down as the Test captain of the Bangladesh team. I do not want to continue as captain in the Test format anymore.”
Shanto emphasized that his decision was not personal, but was made in the interest of the team. “There should not be three captains in the dressing room. I believe this decision will be good for the team’s future,” he added.
Shanto had previously captained Bangladesh in all three formats in 2024. He stepped down from the T20 captaincy earlier in the year, with Liton Das taking over. Before the Sri Lanka series, Mehedi Hasan Miraz was appointed ODI captain, reportedly without Shanto being informed.
During his tenure, Shanto led Bangladesh in 14 Test matches, the fifth-highest number for any Bangladesh captain. Under his leadership, the team recorded four Test wins.
