New Delhi, Aug 21 (V7N) — Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked on Wednesday morning during her routine public grievance session, known as a Jan Sunwai, held at her official residence in Civil Lines.

At approximately 8 a.m., a 41-year-old man from Rajkot, Gujarat—identified as Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakriya—approached the chief minister with documents and suddenly grabbed her hand, pulling her hair and delivering a blow before being subdued by security personnel. Gupta, though shaken, sustained only minor injuries and is in stable condition.

Authorities quickly arrested the assailant, who is now in custody and undergoing interrogation. Initial inquiries suggest the attacker may have been distressed over a Supreme Court order concerning the relocation of stray dogs. His family confirmed he is a dog lover and was upset by the directive, though other motives—such as requesting assistance for a relative detained in Tihar Jail—are also being examined.

Delhi BJP officials have labeled the incident a "well-planned conspiracy," pointing to CCTV evidence that shows the man conducted surveillance of the CM’s residence prior to the attack. They are calling for a full investigation into potential political motives.

Chief Minister Gupta described the incident as a "cowardly attempt" to undermine her dedication to public service. Despite the incident, she expressed her resolve to continue holding public hearings with even greater commitment.

In response, security arrangements are under review. Gupta’s protection under Z+ category may be upgraded to include an Advanced Security Liaison team, and the security detail will likely be enhanced with stricter visitor checks and physical barriers.
