Chattogram, Aug 13 (V7N) – A physician from Chattogram was reportedly assaulted by local miscreants after refusing to pay extortion money. The incident occurred in the Baklia area of the city, prompting widespread concern after a distressing video of the injured doctor surfaced on social media.
The victim, Dr. Iqbal Hossain, currently works at Ibn Sina Hospital in Chattogram. Following the assault, he was admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for treatment. On Tuesday night, a 36-second video went viral on Facebook, showing Dr. Hossain with visible injuries and blood on his face, pleading for help.
In the video, Dr. Hossain can be heard saying: “I am Dr. Iqbal. I’m hiding in a room in Puratan Chartala, Baklia. They are trying to kill me. BNP’s Harun and his men beat me up because I didn’t give them money. I’ve called 999, but it’s been 20–30 minutes and no one has arrived. They’ve taken my niece and nephew. Please, save me.”
According to police sources, the incident took place near the Nur Begum Jame Mosque in Baklia. Dr. Hossain had reportedly begun construction work on a building in the area, which local authorities claim was unauthorized. Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ikhtiar Uddin of Baklia Police Station said a dispute occurred during a meeting regarding the construction, which escalated into a physical altercation. However, OC Uddin stated that there is no confirmed evidence linking any BNP leader to the assault at this stage.
Despite this, Dr. Hossain maintains that the attack was carried out under the direction of local BNP figure Harun after he refused to pay extortion money. Police eventually arrived at the scene and rescued the doctor. He was then transferred to the hospital for medical attention.
The incident has raised serious concerns about law and order in the area, particularly regarding the safety of professionals and the alleged political backing of local gangs. Rights activists have called for an impartial investigation to determine whether political influence played a role in the attack and to ensure accountability for all involved.
If confirmed, this incident would mark yet another case of professionals being targeted by local extortionists, a troubling trend that continues to undermine public confidence in both community safety and political accountability. The authorities have yet to make any arrests in connection with the incident, and further investigation is ongoing.
