California, July 8 (V7N) — Julio César Chávez Jr., professional boxer and son of boxing legend Julio César Chávez Sr., was reportedly taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) last week. As of Monday, his attorney expressed uncertainty about whether Chávez Jr. remains in the United States.

Chávez Jr. was scheduled to appear in Los Angeles Superior Court’s Northwest Division on Monday to request early release from a pretrial diversion program related to gun charges filed against him in January 2024. However, he failed to appear in court.

Michael Goldstein, Chávez Jr.'s legal representative, revealed that he was unaware of his client’s current location. According to Goldstein, two days prior, he learned that Chávez Jr. was being held in Hidalgo, Texas, under the custody of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). When asked if Chávez Jr. was still in the U.S., Goldstein responded, “We have no idea. We have no information. Unfortunately.”

The pretrial diversion program had allowed Chávez Jr. to avoid prosecution by meeting certain conditions, but his failure to appear in court and subsequent detention by immigration authorities have complicated his legal situation.

No official statement has been released by ICE or DHS regarding Chávez Jr.'s status or potential deportation proceedings. The boxer’s current legal team is seeking more information and working to determine the next steps for his defense and immigration status.
