Dhaka, Aug 02 (V7N) – The first testimony in the July genocide case against Sheikh Hasina is set to begin tomorrow (August 3) at the International Crimes Tribunal. A live broadcast of the proceedings may take place, pending the tribunal’s approval.
This update was confirmed on Saturday (August 2) by tribunal prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim.
Earlier, on July 10, the three-member International Crimes Tribunal-1, led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder, ordered the trial of three individuals, including Sheikh Hasina, in connection with crimes against humanity committed during the July–August period. The tribunal rejected the exemption pleas submitted by the accused and scheduled the opening statement for August 3, with testimony initially set to begin on August 4. However, the first witness will now testify a day earlier than planned.
Among the accused, Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal have been declared absconders. Former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, currently in custody, has already confessed to his involvement and agreed to testify as a state witness.
This high-profile case has drawn intense national and international attention as it marks a significant turning point in the tribunal’s efforts to address allegations of crimes against humanity during the recent political upheaval in Bangladesh.
