Dhaka, July 06 (V7N) — Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Nayebe Ameer Professor Mujibur Rahman has called for local elections under the proportional representation (PR) system following the trial of those responsible for the killings during the recent mass uprising and the implementation of essential reforms. He emphasized that such elections would serve as a test of the country’s electoral system ahead of national polls.

He made these remarks during a discussion meeting marking the occasion of holy Ashura, held at the Dhaka Metropolitan South Jamaat central office in Purana Paltan on Sunday (July 6).

Reflecting on the nation’s history, Mujibur Rahman stated, “Bangladesh was born through the war with Pakistan with the hope of achieving our rights and the right to vote. But the very objective of Bangladesh’s birth has not been fulfilled, which is why the July mass uprising occurred.”

He further asserted that the struggle to establish democracy must continue, noting that “the right to vote has not yet been secured in Bangladesh.” Mujibur Rahman insisted that democracy cannot flourish until justice is ensured for those who collaborated with the deposed regime. He argued that elections will remain unfair unless comprehensive reforms are carried out.

Highlighting Jamaat’s ideological stance, Mujibur Rahman concluded, “To establish good governance in Bangladesh, governance must be based on the laws of the Quran.”
