Sylhet, Dec 16 (V7N) – The Great Victory Day was celebrated in Sylhet with due dignity and widespread participation, commemorating the historic triumph of Bangladesh’s Liberation War and honoring the sacrifices of the nation’s martyrs.

The day’s observance began at sunrise with a 31-gun salute at the premises of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office. This was followed by the laying of floral wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar. Later, the national flag was hoisted at the Sylhet District Stadium, accompanied by the rendition of the national anthem. A colorful parade and patriotic display were held with the participation of members of various uniformed services and students from schools and colleges.

The parade and display ceremony was presided over by Sylhet District Commissioner Md. Sarwar Alam, while the Divisional Commissioner, Khan Md. Reza-un-Nabi, attended as the chief guest.

In his address, the Divisional Commissioner said that Bangladesh is moving forward under the leadership of the current interim government with a vision of deep patriotism, national unity, and state reform. He noted that despite more than five decades of post-independence challenges, obstacles, and shortcomings in governance, the country is progressing toward poverty alleviation, economic development, food security, good governance, women’s empowerment, and the protection of fundamental rights, including quality education for all. He added that timely reforms and prudent economic management have helped keep both the macro and micro economies stable, and emphasized that collective responsibility and unity are essential to achieving sustainable economic self-reliance.

He further stressed that the new generation must acquire modern, science- and technology-based knowledge and skills to benefit from the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Necessary reforms in the education system, he said, are vital to developing internationally competitive human resources so that Bangladesh can integrate more effectively into the global development trajectory.

Referring to the Election Commission-announced 13th National Parliamentary Election and referendum, he described them as a milestone in restoring democracy and good governance in the country. He urged all voters to actively participate and exercise their voting rights to elect honest, patriotic, and capable representatives, thereby contributing to meaningful state reforms.

Highlighting Sylhet’s significant role in the Liberation War, District Commissioner Md. Sarwar Alam said that as a border district, Sylhet served as a crucial support base for freedom fighters. Local people provided shelter, food, medical care for the wounded, and unwavering assistance. Many young people crossed the border into India to receive training and took part in the war; while some returned with the joy of victory, many laid down their lives for the country. He affirmed that the nation must establish a system of governance where citizens can live with dignity, confidence, and security, and pledged to protect the hard-earned independence through unity, peace, and prioritizing national interests over violence.

The Victory Day programs were attended by Range DIG Md. Mushfekur Rahman, Police Commissioner Abdul Quddus Chowdhury, Superintendent of Police Akhtar Ul Alam, valiant freedom fighters, senior officials from government and non-government offices, leaders of various political parties, members of child and youth organizations, and representatives from print and electronic media.

Members of the Bangladesh Police, Bangladesh Ansar and VDP, Bangladesh Jail, Rover Scouts, Scouts, Girl Guides, and students from various educational institutions participated in the parade, adding to the grandeur and patriotic spirit of the Victory Day celebrations in Sylhet.
