Tangail, July 3 (V7N) — Jahangir Mondal (40), also known locally as Chakma Jahangir and accused in over a dozen criminal cases including murder, extortion, and drug trafficking, was killed early Wednesday in an alleged rival gang attack in Gopalpur upazila of Tangail district.
According to local sources and police, the incident occurred around dawn near the Shakharia sluice gate area of Nalin Bazar. Jahangir, a resident of Madhya Shakharia village under Hemnagar Union, was returning from Sonamui Bazar when a group of unidentified assailants ambushed him. He was brutally hacked and left critically injured by the roadside.
Locals rescued the victim and rushed him to Bhuapur Upazila Health Complex. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was later transferred to Tangail General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
Police suspect the killing stemmed from internal conflicts over control of illegal businesses — including drug trade, sand mining operations along the Jamuna River, and extortion rackets. Jahangir reportedly ran a gang involved in various organized crimes such as robbery, narcotics trade, and violence against women. He had criminal cases filed against him across three police stations: Gopalpur, Bhuapur, and Mirzapur.
Speaking to reporters, Umar Ali, In-Charge of Hemnagar Police Investigation Center, said, “Jahangir was a known gang leader active in the Jamuna riverside regions of Tangail and Jamalpur. His criminal network had destabilized entire communities with their activities.”
Gopalpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Golam Muktadir Ashraf confirmed the incident and said that the murder appears to be the result of long-standing rivalry between criminal factions. Jahangir’s body has been sent to Tangail General Hospital for autopsy. Legal proceedings will follow upon receipt of a formal complaint.
