Chattogram, July 7 (V7N) — Former Chattogram port labor leader Humayun Kabir has issued a formal apology to Brigadier General (Retd.) M Sakhawat Hossain, an adviser to the Ministry of Shipping, after initially declaring him "unwelcome" at the port over policy disagreements.
The controversy arose on June 28 during a meeting at the office of the port’s labor wing, adjacent to the auction shed at Chattogram Port. In that meeting, Kabir, a former CBA (Collective Bargaining Agent) leader, expressed strong dissatisfaction with recent ministerial decisions concerning operations at the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT).
Kabir's remarks—widely viewed as inappropriate and disrespectful—prompted a response from ministry officials, including a formal notice demanding an explanation. In his reply, Kabir stated that his comments were made “mistakenly, unintentionally, and out of ignorance,” and offered an unconditional apology.
He further withdrew his statements and expressed regret, acknowledging the adviser’s role and position within the ministry. His letter of apology was submitted in response to the show-cause notice issued by the concerned authorities.
The tension reportedly stemmed from ongoing disputes over administrative changes and policy implementations involving NCT operations. While the specific decisions at the heart of the dispute were not officially disclosed, sources within the port suggested they relate to recent structural reforms aimed at improving efficiency and transparency in container handling.
Brigadier General (Retd.) M Sakhawat Hossain, who has served as an adviser on maritime affairs, is known for his assertive stance on reforming port logistics and addressing labor-management issues. The apology appears to have defused immediate tensions, though observers note lingering dissatisfaction among some labor groups.
The Ministry of Shipping has not made any further public comment on the issue as of Monday. However, port authorities have urged all stakeholders to maintain professionalism and decorum in resolving disputes.
