Dhaka, Feb 14 (V7N) — Tarique Rahman, chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, held his first press conference following the party’s victory in the 13th National Parliament elections, expressing gratitude to the people of Bangladesh for ensuring BNP’s success.
Speaking at the party’s post-election briefing on Saturday (February 14), Tarique Rahman described the victory as a triumph for democracy, the nation, and the democracy-loving citizens of Bangladesh. “From today, we are independent,” he declared.
He extended congratulations to all citizens, noting that the people’s active participation had paved the way for an accountable parliament and government after more than fifteen years. Tarique Rahman highlighted that the country is beginning a new journey through challenges left by previous governance, including a fragile economy, ineffective constitutional institutions, and weak law and order.
The BNP Chairman also acknowledged the participation of 51 political parties in the elections, including Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, National Citizens Party, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Jamiat-e-Islam, and Gana Adhikar Parishad, congratulating each for their contribution to the democratic process.
Emphasizing the role of political parties as the beacons of democracy, Tarique Rahman called on both government and opposition to act responsibly to ensure democracy takes institutional form in the country.
He appealed to all democratic parties to contribute to nation-building, stressing that differences of opinion are secondary to national interest. “National unity is our strength, division is our weakness,” he said, urging all parties to work together for the country’s progress.
