Rangpur, Feb 8 (V7N) — Akhtar Hossain, member secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and a candidate of the 11-party alliance contesting with the “Shapla Kali” symbol in the Rangpur-4 (Kaunia–Pirgachha) constituency, has received death threats ahead of the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election.
Following the incident, Akhtar Hossain filed a General Diary (GD) with Pirgachha Police Station on Saturday, seeking legal protection.
According to the GD, Akhtar Hossain stated that he is contesting the 2026 parliamentary election from constituency No. 22, Rangpur-4, with the backing of the 11-party alliance and as an NCP nominee. On Saturday afternoon at around 5:30 pm, while conducting election campaigning in Kishamat village under Chhawla Union of Pirgachha upazila, he received a phone call on his personal mobile number from an unknown number. The caller allegedly issued threats to his life before abruptly disconnecting the call.
In the GD, Akhtar Hossain expressed concern that the unknown caller could cause serious harm to him at any time and said the incident needed to be officially recorded for future reference. He submitted the application to the officer-in-charge of Pirgachha Police Station requesting necessary action.
In a video message released later the same day, Akhtar Hossain confirmed receiving the threats and said intimidation would not stop his political journey. He stated that his campaign is moving forward with public support and that he would not retreat due to threats.
He added that electoral competition should be based on ideology and programs, not fear or intimidation, noting that such politics is rejected by the people. He also claimed that leaders and activists of the Shapla Kali symbol have been threatened in his constituency, similar to incidents elsewhere in the country. According to him, the caller used abusive language and issued threats targeting him and his family.
Local authorities have not yet commented on any investigation measures, but the matter has been officially recorded through the general diary.
