Dhaka, Dec 20, (V7N) — Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed profound shock and grief at the death of Air Vice Marshal (Retd.) A.K. Khandaker, Bir Uttam. In a press statement issued on Saturday afternoon, the senior leader paid high tribute to the late war hero, describing him as a pivotal figure in the nation’s history who served as the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Mukti Bahini during the 1971 Liberation War and later as the first Chief of the Bangladesh Air Force.

Fakhrul stated that the entire nation is saddened by the loss of a courageous patriot who played an instrumental role during the country’s struggle for independence. "A.K. Khandaker’s heroic contributions as a Group Captain in 1971 and his leadership in building the nation's defense forces are unforgettable," Fakhrul remarked. He further noted that the "Bir Uttam" title and the 2011 "Swadhinata Padak" (Independence Award) were fitting recognitions for a man of such unique caliber and dedication.

In his condolence message, the BNP Secretary General extended his deepest sympathies to the bereaved family members, friends, and well-wishers of the deceased. He prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and asked for divine strength for the family to bear this irreparable loss. A.K. Khandaker passed away at the age of 95 due to old-age complications at 10:35 am today, leaving behind a legacy of service in both military and civilian life, including his tenure as a Member of Parliament and Planning Minister.
