Dhaka, Aug 05 (V7N) – Dr. Abdullah Mohammad Taher, Nayeb-e-Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami, has strongly advocated for implementing a Proportional Representation (PR) system in Bangladesh's electoral process, rejecting the traditional method.
Speaking at a rally organized by Jamaat-e-Islami in Mohakhali, Dhaka, on Tuesday, to mark the first anniversary of the July Uprising, Dr. Taher declared:
"Elections in Bangladesh must not be held through the traditional method. Without PR, no election will be accepted."
He criticized those opposing the PR system, claiming they prefer money and muscle-based politics over public popularity.
Key Points from His Statement:
-
Rejection of Traditional Electoral Methods:
Dr. Taher asserted that only a PR system can ensure true representation and fairness in elections. -
Criticism of Political Rivals:
He accused opponents of relying on extortion and terrorism rather than public support to win elections. -
Warning to Awami League:
He stated that the Awami League would not be able to return to power and warned that any future attempts to re-establish fascism would be resisted by the people. -
Vow to Defend Sovereignty:
Dr. Taher affirmed that Jamaat-e-Islami would oppose any threat to Bangladesh's independence and sovereignty.
The rally was part of broader political programs taking place across the country as parties mark one year since the July Mass Uprising, which led to the ousting of the former ruling regime.
