Dhaka, Aug 04 (V7N) – The Election Commission (EC) is set to finalize a new code of conduct for political parties and candidates on Thursday, which may include provisions regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in election campaigns, said Akhtar Ahmed, Senior Secretary of the Election Commission Secretariat.
At a press briefing held at the Election Building on Monday, Ahmed highlighted the EC's growing concern over the misuse of AI, stating, “AI can be a serious issue. The commission is reviewing its potential impact very seriously.” His remarks align with earlier warnings by the Chief Election Commissioner, who also expressed concern that AI-driven disinformation could significantly disrupt electoral campaigns.
Political Party Registration and Audit Reports
Ahmed reported that the EC has received 145 applications from political parties seeking registration. However, many of these applications were incomplete, and the commission has requested additional documentation from the concerned parties. As of now:
-
80 parties have submitted proper information
-
6 parties have requested more time
-
The remainder have yet to respond
The EC will begin field investigations to verify the claims and credentials of the applicants.
Currently, 51 political parties are registered with the EC. Among them:
-
30 parties have submitted their audit reports
-
15 parties have requested extensions
-
5 parties have not submitted any reports
-
1 party, newly registered this year, has also sought an extension
Election Preparations and Timeline
Ahmed announced that the final voter list will be published on August 31, and the procurement of election materials will be completed by September 30.
A 7-member European Union delegation is scheduled to visit Bangladesh in mid-September to evaluate election preparations. Training programs for election officials and staff are currently underway.
EC’s Stance on Trust and Criticism
When asked about criticism from political parties regarding the EC’s neutrality, Ahmed stated that the commission is focusing on fulfilling its constitutional duties. “Political statements are not under our jurisdiction. Our responsibility is to conduct a fair and inclusive election,” he said.
The election schedule will only be announced once all preparations are complete, the secretary added.
The inclusion of AI in the electoral code could mark a significant step forward in combating misinformation and maintaining the integrity of Bangladesh's upcoming national elections.
