Rangpur, July 1 (V7N) — The National Citizens Party (NCP) has vowed to bring to justice those responsible for crimes against humanity during the July Uprising and to rebuild Bangladesh through fundamental reforms, including the repeal of the current constitution.
NCP member secretary Akhtar Hossain made these remarks on Tuesday morning after paying respects at the grave of martyr Abu Sayeed, who was killed in police firing during last year’s July Uprising.
“Abu Sayeed is a symbol of our betrayal and our hope. From his grave, we dream of a new Bangladesh — a nation free from discrimination,” said Akhtar. “We swear by his grave: until an anti-discrimination Bangladesh is established through new settlements and reforms, our struggle will continue under the leadership of students and the masses.”
Akhtar stressed that the perpetrators of atrocities during the uprising must face trial. “The outdated ‘Mujibist’ constitution must be abolished, and a new constitution must be formulated through Constituent Assembly elections,” he added. “Only then can we reconstruct Bangladesh on new foundations.”
The day’s program began at 10:30 am, when NCP leaders — including convener Nahid Islam, spokesperson Nasir Uddin Patwari, and regional and central leaders — visited Abu Sayeed’s grave in Rangpur. They later met with his family, promising justice and support.
The NCP’s “To Do Well, To Build the Country” July march started with the grave visit and continued through Palashbari, Sadullapur, Sundarganj, and Rangpur city, concluding for the day. The next phase will see the march move to Kaunia.
