Dhaka, June 27 (V7N) — Nurul Haque Nur, President of the Public Rights Council (Gono Odhikar Parishad), has called for holding local government elections—such as city corporation, upazila, or municipality polls—before the national elections to demonstrate the fitness and impartiality of the administration.
He made the remarks on Friday afternoon at a special extended meeting of his party at the Diploma Engineers Institute in the capital.
Nur warned that if the government holds national elections in the same manner as previous night-time elections, its intentions would be clear. He alleged that the interim government and the current administration are biased toward a particular party, with officials flattering that party in anticipation of future positions and titles.
Complaining about the preferential treatment, he said, “Leaders of that party are given VIP protocol wherever they go. This tendency to promote any particular party must stop. The opinions of all political parties should be considered in the government’s local-level security measures.”
Nur also stated that all political parties except one major party support proportional representation in elections. Regardless of candidate strength, he asserted that the Public Rights Council would field candidates in all 300 constituencies in the upcoming election.
He further emphasized that the nation must move towards elections after reforms to the quota system. “The current government must play its part in eliminating muscle power and the dominance of any particular party,” he said.
