Dhaka, June 22 (V7N) – The National Citizens Party (NCP), formed by student leaders who spearheaded the recent mass uprising, is set to submit its application for official registration to the Election Commission (EC) today (Sunday, June 22). According to party sources, top leaders were busy finalizing the process until late last night.
Today is the last day for submitting applications for registration of new political parties ahead of the upcoming 13th National Parliament elections.
The NCP officially made its debut on May 28 but had yet to apply for registration, raising questions from various quarters regarding its participation in dialogues with the government, including meetings with the Consensus Commission.
Explaining the delay, NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain said, “It takes time to fulfill the Election Commission’s conditions for registration. Committees need to be formed at the district and upazila levels. After completing these organizational processes, we are now applying for registration.”
Akhtar further stated, “The NCP has completed the formation of its committees at district and upazila levels, established offices, collected member forms, and fulfilled all other necessary requirements. We are optimistic about securing registration.”
Regarding the party’s election symbol, Akhtar noted that several symbols have been shortlisted, including pens and books, but the final selection will be revealed after submitting the application. “Many suggestions for symbols have come in from supporters through our new campaign,” added Joint Convener Ariful Islam Adeeb. “Our registration team is reviewing them, and the decision may come at the last minute.”
As for the party’s permanent address, Akhtar confirmed that the NCP has signed a one-year agreement with the owners of Rupayan Tower to use a designated floor as their party headquarters.
Additionally, the party has already finalized its draft constitution through a general meeting. According to party rules, the NCP’s president and general secretary will be elected through a national council, comprising representatives from central committees, five members from each district or equivalent unit, and two members from each police station-level committee. These representatives will cast their votes to elect the party’s top leadership.
