Dhaka, June 17 (V7N) — Jamaat-e-Islami did not participate in the second day of the second phase of discussions organized by the National Consensus Commission. However, representatives from BNP, Nationalist Consensus Party (NCP), Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal (BSD), Islami Andolon Bangladesh (IAB), and several other political parties were present and actively took part in the dialogue.

The meeting began at 12:45 PM on Tuesday (June 17) at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital, Dhaka. Although it was scheduled to start at 11:00 AM, the session was delayed as organizers waited for Jamaat’s representatives, who ultimately did not attend.

In his opening remarks, Professor Ali Riaz, Vice-Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, emphasized the importance of cooperation from all political parties, expressing hope that a national charter could be finalized by July if consensus is reached. While acknowledging that not all proposals from the commission may be acceptable to everyone, he urged the political leaders to demonstrate flexibility for the greater interest of the nation.

Key Agenda Items Discussed:

  • Proposed amendments to Article 70 of the Constitution

  • Formation of parliamentary standing committees from opposition parties

  • Election procedures for women’s reserved seats

  • Appointment process of the Chief Justice

  • Proposal to establish an upper house of parliament

The meeting underscored the pressing need for national dialogue amid ongoing political polarization in the country.
