Dhaka, July 12 (V7N) – The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have revealed that the brutal killing of Lal Chand Sohag (39), a scrap metal trader, in front of Mitford Hospital was not linked to extortion, but rather stemmed from a business-related conflict.

Mohammad Jasim Uddin, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the DMP’s Lalbagh Division, made the disclosure during a press briefing on Saturday.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that the murder was the result of a dispute over control of a scrap metal shop and its financial dealings,” said DC Jasim Uddin.

So far, five individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident. Among them, a man named Mahin has been identified as the prime accused.

The police official added that the arrests were made after reviewing CCTV footage of the murder. He said that investigators have yet to confirm the political affiliations of the suspects, if any. “We are still investigating whether the killing was purely due to a business feud or if there were deeper motives. However, the investigation will proceed without any political bias,” he assured.

The horrific murder took place on July 9 in broad daylight, when Sohag was attacked and beaten to death by a group of men. The brutality of the incident—caught on video—sparked widespread outrage and condemnation across the country after the footage went viral on social media.

Following the incident, Sohag's sister filed a case at Kotwali Police Station on Thursday, naming 19 individuals and listing 10–15 unknown assailants.

The investigation into the case is ongoing.
