Dhaka, June 30 (V7N) — The NBR Reform Unity Council has announced the withdrawal of its complete shutdown program at the National Board of Revenue (NBR) following assurances from the government and business leaders.
The shutdown, which had created significant disruption in revenue collection and trade operations, was called off on Sunday night (June 29).
Hasan Mohammad Tarek Rikabder, President of the NBR Reform Unity Council, said:
"There has been a positive response on some issues. We welcome the government’s decision to form a committee. At the request of the business community, we have decided to withdraw the shutdown and keep operations running."
Earlier in the day, a 10-member business delegation held discussions with Finance Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, leading to the formation of a 5-member advisory committee to address the NBR crisis.
However, tensions within the NBR persist. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched investigations into alleged illegal asset accumulation by six NBR officials, reportedly linked to tax evasion schemes in exchange for bribes.
NBR sources indicate that five of these officials are actively involved in the ongoing agitation. Among them are key figures in the NBR Reform Unity Council: President Hasan Mohammad Tarek Rikabder, Vice-Presidents Mirza Ashiq Rana and Shahreen Sushmita.
The agitation at the NBR began on May 12, centering on resistance to government-led reform initiatives. The standoff has led to deadlock in crucial revenue collection processes and significant disruption in trade.
The business community and government officials have urged all parties to work towards a swift, sustainable solution in the national interest.
