Savar, Sep 11 (V7N) – Voting has begun in the long-awaited Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) elections, which are being held after a gap of 33 years. Balloting, scheduled to start at 9 am Thursday, began slightly late and will continue until 5 pm.
Ballot boxes, papers, and other election materials were delivered to polling centers earlier in the morning, while polling agents from various panels took charge of their responsibilities. University authorities have deployed strict security measures to ensure a fair and peaceful election.
This year, 11,843 students are eligible to cast their votes across 21 residential halls. Among them, 10 candidates are vying for Vice President (VP), although one, Amartya Roy, faces complications over his candidacy. For the post of General Secretary (GS), nine candidates are in the race, while Syeda Ananya Faria withdrew her nomination at the last moment.
In addition, 10 candidates are contesting the Assistant General Secretary (AGS) male post, and six for the female post, along with multiple contenders for the remaining 21 central posts. In total, 177 candidates are competing for 25 central positions, supported by eight different panels including the Left, Islami Chhatra Shibir, Chhatra Dal, and independent groups.
Voting is being conducted in 224 booths across the university’s 21 residential halls, with 134 polling officers and assistants overseeing the process. Notably, the Taramon Bibi Hall has the highest number of registered female voters (983), while the National Poet Nazrul Hall leads among male students with 992 voters.
The authorities have confirmed that counting will begin at 5 pm in the Senate Hall of the old register building.
