Chattogram, June 22 (V7N) – The Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) has temporarily suspended a final-year student from the Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering following allegations of religious defamation. The decision was made amid growing tensions among students on campus.
The action was taken during the 291st meeting of CUET’s Students’ Discipline Committee, held late Friday night. The university formally announced the suspension in an official notice issued on Saturday.
According to the statement, the student has been suspended on a temporary basis and has also been served with a show-cause notice, requiring a formal explanation of the incident.
The university administration stated that the disciplinary measure was taken to maintain order on campus and to allow for a thorough investigation. Sources say unrest among students began after accusations surfaced that the student had made comments deemed offensive to religious sentiments.
University authorities have urged all students to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information, while promising a fair and transparent investigation process.
Incidents involving religious sensitivity are rare but often volatile in Bangladesh's higher education institutions. In recent years, universities across the country have faced challenges balancing freedom of expression with communal harmony.
The university has not disclosed further details regarding the nature of the allegation, citing ongoing investigations. As of now, no formal complaint has been registered with law enforcement agencies.
The situation remains tense, with increased vigilance from the university's administration to prevent escalation. Further updates are expected as the inquiry progresses.
