Cox’s Bazar, Sept 20 (V7N) – A local political leader was brutally killed in Teknaf’s North Jaliapara area early Friday when unidentified assailants attacked him with sharp weapons and slit his throat.

The victim was identified as Emdad Hossain, 47, son of late Ali Hossain of North Jaliapara under Ward-7 of Teknaf Municipality. He was the joint secretary of the municipality unit of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and the leaseholder of the Transit Jetty Ghat canteen.

According to locals, the incident occurred around 3 a.m. in front of the victim’s home near the house of late Omar Siddique, a former local member. Returning home from a wedding ceremony, Emdad was ambushed by a group of armed men who attacked him with iron rods before hacking him repeatedly with machetes and knives. His screams drew the attention of nearby residents, but the attackers fled the scene before help arrived.

Neighbors rushed Emdad to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. Dr. Asif Alvi of the emergency department confirmed that the victim had already died before reaching the hospital. Police later recovered the body.

Shamsu Alam, the victim’s younger brother, alleged that the attack was carried out by a group led by Kamal Hossain and Nurul Islam, sons of late Abdus Salam, along with Abdur Rahman, Md. Ismail, Md. Shafiq, Md. Hamid, Ilyas, Syed Alam, and 10 to 15 others. “They first struck him with iron rods, knocking him to the ground, before hacking him with sharp weapons and finally slitting his throat to ensure his death,” he said.

Abdur Razzak, president of Teknaf Municipality BNP, condemned the killing, calling it the work of local criminals. “We demand immediate action from law enforcement to arrest and punish those responsible,” he said.

Officer-in-Charge of Teknaf Model Police Station, Abu Zayed Md. Nazmun Nur, confirmed the incident. “Police rushed to the scene immediately after receiving the report, but the attackers had already fled. We are working to identify and apprehend those involved as quickly as possible,” he said.

The killing has sparked outrage in the community, with residents demanding swift justice and heightened security to curb rising violence in the area.
