Dhaka, Sep 02 (V7N) – The High Court’s order suspending the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections will be heard tomorrow, Wednesday, in the regular bench of the Appellate Division. Until then, the stay order issued by the Chamber Court will remain in force.
Chamber Justice Farah Mahbub issued the stay on Tuesday in response to an appeal by Dhaka University authorities challenging the High Court’s postponement order.
Earlier, the High Court had ordered the postponement of DUCSU elections until October 30 following a writ petition filed on August 28 by BM Fahmida Alam, a candidate of the ‘Aparajeyo 71’ Left-Bound panel. The petition challenged the candidacy of GS candidate and Chhatra Shibir leader SM Farhad. The Chamber Court intervened less than an hour after the appeal was filed, temporarily suspending the High Court order.
The DUCSU voting was originally scheduled for September 9. In addition to the central election, the 18 hall parliaments of Dhaka University are also set for elections, with 1,035 candidates contesting 13 posts across the halls. A total of 471 candidates are contesting 28 posts in the DUCSU central election.
Various student organizations, including Chhatra Dal, Chhatra Shibir, the Democratic Students’ Union, and leftist groups, have announced separate panels for this year’s elections, totaling around 10 full and partial panels.
