Pabna, Aug 26 (V7N) — A court in Pabna has sentenced Tanvir Hossain, an imam and adopted son of a retired banker, to death for the brutal murder of his guardian, the man’s wife, and their adopted daughter. The murders took place in 2020 over financial greed.

Following a five-year trial, the Pabna Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court-3, presided over by Judge Tanvir Ahmed, on Monday sentenced Tanvir Hossain to death for the premeditated killing of retired bank official Abdul Jabbar (60), his wife Shumma Khatun (50), and their adopted 12-year-old daughter Sanjida.

Tanvir Hossain, formerly the imam of a local mosque and treated as an adopted son by the family, was found guilty of murdering all three in a calculated attempt to seize their savings and valuables.

According to the case statement, Abdul Jabbar was a retired officer of Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB). The couple, having no biological children, adopted Sanjida when she was just one day old and lived in the Dilalpur neighborhood of Pabna town. Tanvir, who served as the imam at the nearby Pabna Fire Service mosque, was treated like a son and lived close to the family.

Over time, Tanvir became increasingly envious of the couple’s savings, gold ornaments, and cash. On the night of May 31, 2020, after returning early from a break in his native village in Haripur, Naogaon, he stayed at their residence. At around 2:30 a.m., while the family slept, Tanvir attacked them using a sharp weapon and a wooden bat. He killed Jabbar first, followed by his wife Shumma and then Sanjida.

After the murders, Tanvir cleaned himself, washed his blood-stained clothes, and stole approximately Tk 200,000 in cash, INR 100,000, and gold jewelry from the house before fleeing just before dawn prayers.

Five days later, on June 5, local residents alerted authorities after noticing a foul smell coming from the residence. Police recovered the decomposing bodies and launched a full-scale investigation.

Jabbar’s brother, Abdul Kader, filed a murder case, and on June 6, Tanvir was arrested from his family home in Mahadevpur, Naogaon. During initial interrogation, he confessed to the killings, and some of the stolen items were later recovered based on information he provided.

Police submitted a charge sheet against Tanvir as the sole accused. Charges were formally framed on January 11, 2022, and the court heard testimony from 22 witnesses.

On August 25, 2025, the court sentenced Tanvir to death for murder and fined him BDT 50,000. He was also given five years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined Tk 20,000 for theft.

Additional Public Prosecutor Abul Kalam Azad, who represented the state, expressed satisfaction with the verdict, calling it a step toward justice.

Defense lawyers KM Mizanur Rahman and Kazi Maqbul Ahmed Babu stated that they will appeal the verdict in the higher court in hopes of securing a more favorable outcome for the convict.

The case has drawn significant attention locally, both for the brutality of the crime and the betrayal of trust by someone considered part of the victim’s family.
