Dhaka, Sep 15 (V7N) – The International Monetary Fund (IMF), which is currently implementing a $5.5 billion loan program in Bangladesh, has expressed interest in expanding future cooperation with the country.
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva is scheduled to hold a virtual meeting with the Interim Government’s Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday evening to discuss the scope of future collaboration, officials confirmed.
Earlier, Dr. Yunus wrote to the IMF Managing Director thanking the organization for its continued support in the government’s reform process. In response, Georgieva assured him of the IMF’s long-term commitment to assist Bangladesh’s development.
On January 30, 2023, the IMF Executive Board approved a $4.7 billion loan proposal for Bangladesh, to be disbursed in six installments over 42 months. To date, five installments have already been released.
In June 2024, the IMF approved an additional $800 million based on Bangladesh’s needs, raising the total loan under the current program to $5.5 billion.
