SANGSAD BHABAN, March 29, (V7N) — Local Government, Rural Development and Co‑operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told Parliament today that the previous “fascist regime” had committed massive corruption in the name of development, particularly through mega projects.
“It’s unfortunate for us that utter corruption was committed in the name of mega projects or development during the regime of the past fascist government. It is our realization after we came in power one month ago,” Alamgir said, replying to a supplementary question from opposition lawmaker Akhter Hossen (Rangpur‑4) during the question‑answer session.
The minister, also BNP Secretary General, said roads and streets in the northern region had remained neglected. He assured the House that the current government would not tolerate corruption and would prioritize rural roads and communication. “InshaAllah, in the coming days, we will not tolerate any such corruption and will work giving the utmost importance to rural roads and communication,” he added.
Opposition MP Akhter Hossen noted that rural people were suffering due to poor roads, as the earlier government had focused on mega projects while neglecting rural infrastructure.
In reply to another supplementary question from Jamaat lawmaker Md Abdul Aleem (Bagerhat‑4), Alamgir said rural roads were not developed significantly due to widespread corruption and nepotism during the previous regime. He confirmed that the government has already taken initiatives to upgrade unpaved earthen roads in phases.
