DHAKA, Mar 9, (V7N) – Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir today firmly assured that Bangladesh has an adequate supply of edible oil and prices will not rise, following a high‑level meeting with importers and refinery owners at the Ministry of Commerce.
“Based on internal government data and direct feedback from market stakeholders, there is an adequate supply of edible oil nationwide,” the minister told reporters, stressing that panic buying is the main cause of temporary strains and localized volatility.
To assess the situation firsthand, the minister, accompanied by the Commerce Secretary, visited markets in Shewrapara. At major outlets such as Swapno and Best Buy, he found sufficient stock with prices matching labels. However, in smaller shops, he observed attempts to hide stock and charge Tk 2–3 extra per liter.
The minister warned that consumer competition in buying creates artificial price pressure and enables dishonest traders to exploit the public. He pledged intensified monitoring, directing the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) and district administrations to expand operations starting tomorrow.
He categorically dismissed rumors of a broader energy crisis, stating there is no shortage of fuel oil, gas or LNG imports. “The price of oil will not increase even by a single drop,” he reiterated, warning against irresponsible use of the word “crisis.”
Concluding the briefing, Muktadir urged citizens to remain calm and purchase only what they need, noting that panic‑driven buying deprives others and creates the illusion of shortage.
