Dhaka, June 23 (V7N) — The government has strongly condemned the recent incident of insulting former Chief Election Commissioner Nurul Huda, pledging strict legal action against those involved. This was stated by Environment Advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan during a briefing on Environment Day held at the Secretariat on Monday afternoon.

The advisor said the government is actively working to curb mob violence and maintain law and order.

Speaking on environmental initiatives, Syeda Rizwana Hasan highlighted the successful restoration of the natural environment on St. Martin’s Island and announced plans to arrange alternative livelihoods for the local community. She also declared a joint campaign by the Ministry of Environment and the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) to prohibit the operation of vehicles carrying open sand loads in Dhaka city.

On the issue of plastic pollution, the advisor stated that 17 products have been categorized as single-use plastics, with cotton buds and straws already banned. A nationwide drive against these products will be launched soon. She praised shopping centers for becoming largely polythene-free and revealed plans to supply jute bags to raw markets where polythene use remains high.

Further steps to combat industrial pollution include an increase in the number of magistrates overseeing enforcement. The advisor also noted that Deputy Commissioners have been instructed to ban mechanical boats in the ecologically sensitive Tanguar Haor area.
