DHAKA, Jan 29, (V7N) — A Dhaka court has granted a three-day remand for former Law Minister Anisul Huq and a four-day remand for former Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam in connection with criminal cases related to the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

Both were presented before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka on Wednesday.

Anisul Huq is facing an attempted murder charge in a case filed at the Mohammadpur Police Station. Police had requested a five-day remand, which the court approved for three days.
Atiqul Islam is implicated in a murder case filed at Badda Police Station. The investigation officer requested a 10-day remand, but the court approved a four-day remand.
The cases are linked to incidents that occurred during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement on July 19, 2024, where two individuals were harmed by gunfire allegedly ordered by the accused.

Anisul Huq is accused in the attempted murder case of Insan Ali, a rickshaw-van driver who was shot and injured near Mohammadpur Bus Stand. The case was filed by his mother on November 13, 2024, accusing 266 individuals.

Atiqul Islam is named in the murder case involving Sumon Shikdar, who was killed during indiscriminate gunfire near Fuji Tower on Pragati Sarani in Badda on the same day. The case was filed by Sumon’s mother, Masuma Begum, accusing former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 179 others.

The public prosecutor, Omar Faruq Faruqui, argued in favor of granting the remands, citing the gravity of the charges. In contrast, defence lawyers requested bail and sought the cancellation of the remands. However, after hearing both sides, Magistrate MA Azharul Islam rejected the bail petitions and granted the remands for both accused.

The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement has been marked by tensions and violence, with allegations of state forces being involved in these incidents. The investigations are ongoing, and authorities are examining the broader implications of the movement on the political landscape.
